Readers Journal
Personally I loved reading this novel it had many twist & turns and ups & downs but the author always found ways to confuse the readers thoughts and feelings towards the antagonist (Ty). The reason why is because in this story the author would share Ty's childhood memories and experiences which made readers sympathies and "fall in love" with the antagonist but also reminding us through the text that he still is a kidnapper who took a young girl from her family. When Gemma is first kidnapped in the beginning of the book I wasn't taken by surprised because i almost expected it happening by the way the story was going. Sure, the author was describing him as very attractive man but something about the setting and the way he was acting and also him talking to her in the airport and buying coffee for a complete stranger seem to bother me so , I didn’t fall for it at first. However, before I even realized what was happening I was falling for him on an emotional level because deep down i felt sympathy for him and I was wanting this story to end happily somehow. I was trying to justify and sympathize with Ty’s ridiculous and fully insane reasoning for taking Gemma in the first place and giving myself self made solutions to make myself believe that there was a good reason why he took her , maybe he was helping her ? or protection her from something she didn't know but only he knew. But that’s what makes this book so amazing though. It’s takes an incredible look into the mind of someone who is slowly developing Stockholm Syndrome. It makes you understand it a little bit more. nut to add on I will say that I was impressed, while at the same time frustrated, with Gemma too. She held her own (emotionally) for sometime while the story continues to reveal itself. She also proves that she's an extremely strong and capable person, but at times I found myself just wanting Gemma to give in to Ty though because he was trying hard for her and not hurting her like usual crazy madmen kidnappers do(even though that makes me sound crazy). But this book seemed a bit unrealistic because he just had taking her for companionship and because he "loves" her and has been stalking her since she was little (she's 16 In the book) But, I just think if this were real life, more traumatic things would have happened. So in that case, I think that this book almost romanticizes kidnapping But, again, we are suppose to be in the mind of a person who is developing Stockholm Syndrome. So my feelings on it being romanticized could be because of the point of view we were stuck in throughout the book and the situations we are put in. Overall, This book was great and it really keeps you thinking and I think that is the way Lucy Christoper wanted us to feel and think about, but this book is on my highly recommended list I hope you enjoy this mind twisting story as well as I did.
