Characters & Plot
In this thrilling story which involves a kidnapping of a young British girl named Gemma and a "madman" who eventually takes her from the airport and moves her to Australia and claims to keep her forever. The author introduces the main characters in the beginning of the story bit by bit but soon the author reveals both the main characters over time. One of the characters I found interesting in this story was Ty who had a lot of background information other than Gemma. he soon shares his childhood Gemma throughout the story(23) And though certain parts of the story he is shown as a deeply damaged man who sees Gemma heading down the same path he took after his arrival in the city and feels the need to rescue her from the monotony and conformity of her life. The reason why he thinks this is because she doesn't have a good relationship it her parents like he also does so he takes her to Australia to purify her spirit and free her from the confines of conventional life. But Gemma who has a pretty tough relationship with her mom and dad, and In her first encounter with Ty, she tells him that her parents' jobs lack substance. "I mean, they just collect stuff," she says "Dad collects people's money and Mum collects people's drawings. What do they really do that's theirs?" (143). I think there's a little of bitterness in the way Gemma describes her parents' job because shes basically trying to describe "parents just don't understand". But overall Gemma is a strong girl It kind of goes without saying that getting drugged in an airport and waking up in the middle of nowhere would jar your senses a bit and For Gemma, that means a lot of fear and anger. Gemma also discovers psychological ways of surviving in her situation, particularly when it comes to dealing with Ty. After she attempts to escape and Ty brings her back to his house, Gemma finds herself "testing how far I could push you" (69.1) before he snaps and can't handle dealing with her. She tries to convince him to take her back to the real world by telling him how much he must hate her to keep her there and tells him how "messed up" (69.39) he is for it.
